For some, a change of gender is the only way they can feel entirely comfortable in their own bodies. But what happens when someone does change their gender and needs to change their passport to reflect this?

The good news is, it is entirely possible to do this. A passport can indeed be changed to reflect the passport holder’s new gender – in fact, not changing it could cause more problems since the passport holder and the passport will no longer match. This is especially true if there has also been a name change.

In order to change the gender on your passport you will need to supply a letter from your doctor, surgeon and/or consultant which must confirm that your change of gender is permanent. You will also need to include a deed poll to confirm the change of name.

A deed poll is required to change your birth name to a new one. It is not needed after a marriage, however. To obtain a deed poll you will need to complete the official forms and register your new name at the Royal Courts of Justice. The price for doing this is £36. You can also employ a specialist solicitor if you would like to, but it is not necessary.

As well as the deed poll, you will also need to supply a gender recognition certificate with your change of gender application. A gender recognition certificate can be obtained by anyone over the age of 18 who has been diagnosed with gender dysphoria or transsexualism. You should also have lived as your new gender for a minimum of two years.

Once the documents and letters have been collated along with a change of name or passport application form, there should be no issues with changing the personal details on your passport. However, before the documents have been processed, and before you have lived as your new gender for a minimum of two years, your passport may not match your identity.
